Check out my backstage interview with Secondhand Serenade lead singer John Vesely Secondhand Serenade is an acoustic rock band from Menlo Park, California. They are best known for their breakthrough hit Fall For You, which went on to become a Top 20 single on radio and was eventually certified Platinum. But before all of their success, Secondhand Serenade was simply John Vesely making music in his home. He distributed his music online through websites like MySpace, developing a large and devoted following. He released his debut album Awake independently in 2005 and distributed it through websites like Paypal and iTunes. Despite the lack of a labe, the album flourished. He quickly became the number one independent artist on all of MySpace and was listed at #3 in Rolling Stone Magazine for Best MySpace Artist. His incredible success soon led to his signing with Glassnote Records. In 2007 Awake was re-released and went on to peak at #164 on the Billboard 200. Songs from the record were featured on platforms like MTV, AOL and Yahoo! Music. John Vesely even made an appearance on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. The only single released off the album, Vulnerable, went on to peak at #83 on the Hot 100, foreshadowing Secondhand Serenade’s mainstream success. In 2008 Secondhand Serenade released his sophomore album Twist In My Story. The record’s title and content was largely inspired by John’s divorce with his wife. Check out my backstage interview with HELLYEAH members Chad Gray and Vinnie Paul at Lazerfest 2010 HELLYEAH is a heavy metal supergroup fronted by Mudvayne lead singer Chad Gray. The band also features Mudvayne guitarist Greg Tribbett, Nothingface guitarist Tom Maxwell, Damageplan bassist Bob Zilla and former Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul. The idea of a supergroup originated back in 2001 when various members of bands like Mudvayne, Nothingface, Slayer, Slipknot and Sevendust went on tour together and discussed forming a separate band. Talks continued over the next few years and the truly interested persons began to come together, forming the current lineup for HELLYEAH. Within the year this unknown group of music superstars went into the studio to record their debut album. And in April 2007, HELLYEAH’s self titled debut album was released under Epic Records, landing at #9 on the Billboard Charts. Featuring the hit singles Alcohaulin Ass, You Wouldn’t Know and Hellyeah, the album received generally positive reviews and gained extensive radio airplay nationwide. Directly following the album’s release, HELLYEAH began touring with superstar acts like Korn and Evanescence, putting the band’s image and music on the national stage. Following extensive touring over several years, HELLYEAH went back into the studio to record their sophomore album Stampede. The New Sound of Music is a fascinating BBC historical documentary from the year 1979. It charts the development of recorded music from the first barrel organs, pianolas, the phonograph, the magnetic tape recorder and onto the concepts of musique concrete and electronic music development with voltage-controlled oscillators making up the analogue synthesizers of the day. EMS Synthesizers and equipment are a heavily featured technology resource in this film, with the show’s host, Michael Rodd, demonstrating the EMS VCS3 synthesizer and it’s waveform output. Other EMS products include the incredible Synthi 100 modular console system, the EMS AKS, the Poly Synthi and the EMS Vocoder. Most of the location shots are filmed within the BBC’s Radiophonic Workshop studios as they were in 1979. Malcolm Clarke demonstrates the Synthi 100, also known as the “Delaware”, Michael Rodd demonstrates musique concrete by tape splicing and manipulation and Paddy Kingsland demonstrates tape recorder delay techniques (also known as “Frippertronics”). The Yamaha CS-80 analogue synthesizer is demonstrated by both Peter Howell and Roger Limb. The EMS Vocoder is also expertly put to use by Peter Howell on his classic “Greenwich Chorus” for the television series “The Body in Question”. Dick Mills works on sound effects for Doctor Who using a VCS3 unit, and Elizabeth Parker uses bubble sounds to create music for an academic film on particle physics.
