The
idea of holding a
food drive to benefit
Panic Fans For
Food was just
another piece of the
puzzle. Since I have
met Josh, I have offered
my assistance in any
way possible, and
I have thoroughly
enjoyed getting to
know him, the cause,
the background, etc.
I knew the kids and
their parents would
respond well to a
food drive, as we
have one every year
around the holidays.
With spring tour and
more food drives kicking
off, it was a natural
fit. I set a goal
of 250 lbs. of food
for my kids, and explained
to them and their
parents what the organization
represents.
On
April 10, 2002, the
Panic Fans For
Food benefit concert
took place. Josh and
Eric came to play
a few songs for my
students, and interact
with them by expressing
their thoughts on
music and compassion/generosity,
and then play This
Part of Town for
an audience of parents,
fellow students, and
my extended family
from the area.
Each
of my kids wore a
Widespread Panic t-shirt,
which came from friends'
and my own personal
collections. Although
the kids were swimming
in the shirts, they
looked absolutely
adorable, and it fit
well into the plan.

When
Josh and Eric practiced
with the kids for
the very first time,
the kids absolutely
nailed the song. Josh
and Eric actually
stopped after the
first verse, realizing
that the kids knew
it so well, and this
was going to be perfect.
After
a few words from Josh
and Eric, they played
a few original tunes
written by Josh, "Legacy"
and "Song to Myself."
This
was followed by a
request for me to
sing, and the three
of us did "I Know
You Rider." Finally,
it was the time for
these kids to shine,
and as Josh and Eric
began playing This
Part of Town,
the energy and emotions
grew within the crowd
of parents and friends.
The
song was gorgeous,
and as I sit here
writing about it to
you, it brings chills
to my spine and tears
to my eyes! To listen
to 46 children sing
so beautifully and
in perfect harmony
with themselves, Josh,
and Eric, was a memory
that will forever
brighten my spirits
and soul. It was
the most special day
of my life, as I was
able to combine the
things that I appreciate
and love most in the
world--the music of
Widespread Panic,
my family of friends,
and especially these
children!
To
finish off the performance,
the kids presented
Josh with 350 lbs.
of food to kick off
the Panic Fans
For Food drive
in Raleigh, NC.. Josh
was totally unaware
of the food drive,
which made it all
the more special.
It was their special
way of saying thank
you to him for all
that he has done to
"give it back," as
well as demonstrating
their compassion and
generosity. |
